FRT18LR7AW2 Frigidaire Refrigerator Not Cooling Properly

by | Sunday, October 14, 2018 | Parker, Refrigerators

When I arrived I opened the freezer door and there was massive frost build-up on the back panel inside the freezer. I Unplugged the refrigerator from the wall outlet, then I got my heat gun and started defrosting it, then I removed the back panel inside the freezer and continued defrosting the evaporator coil.

I noticed a bulge on the top of the defrost thermostat, and ohm tested it while it was still covered in frost and I got no ohms reading at all, so it was bad and the cause of this problem.

Here's the defrost thermostat for this model:

I went out on this service call and found the oven ignitor glow bar was not turning on to light the gas. I checked for 120 volts at the oven ignitor glow bar electrical connector with the oven on and set to bake at 350 degrees, I had no voltage at all to it.

I ordered the clock oven control board and replaced it, and that fixed it, works great!

Its very easy to replace, just pull the range out from the wall, then unplug it, then remove the back console access panel, then remove the clock oven control board by removing the 4 screws, then remove the overlay on the old one and put it in the exact same place as the new one and your all set.

Here's the clock oven control board for this model:

This Freezer was not running at all when I arrived, I checked for 120 volts to it, which it was getting. I then unplugged it from the wall outlet and removed the lower panel inside the freezer and ohm tested the temperature control thermostat, with it in the on position, and got nothing. No continuity between the two electrical terminals on it.

I ordered a new temperature control thermostat and went back to replace it and it fired up and started cooling.

The customer complaint was the dryer was very noisy, I ran the dryer and did confirm it was extremely loud when the drum was turning. I unplugged the dryer and disassembled it and found two of the drum rollers were bad and worn out, wobbling on the roller shaft. The roller shaft also had metal shavings on the dryer base.

I replaced all four rollers and roller shafts, it's always best to replace all four at once. After I replaced them it sounded like a normal dryer running.

I removed back panel in the freezer and found lots of ice clogging up the air vents going to the refrigerator section, and ice clogging the drain line below the freezer evaporator. I de-iced it all, it took awhile to do, but it has to be done before the refrigerator will cool properly again.

I saw the evaporator fan wasn't running in the freezer, so I removed the electrical connector from it and used my multimeter to see if it was getting 120 volts to it, and it was. So I replaced the evaporator fan motor and it started blowing cold air.

I found the customers dryer vent clogged on the outside of their house, which caused the thermal cut-off, which is located on the heating element housing, to go bad.

I cleaned their outside exhaust vent, and cleaned their entire vent hose exhaust in the back of the dryer of all lint.

I unplugged the dryer, then disassembled the dryer and removed the drum to get better access to it, then I ohm tested the thermal cut-off and I got no continuity on my multimeter. I also ohm tested the heating element and the high-limit thermostat and both ohm tested good.

I replaced the thermal cut-off, reassembled the dryer, plugged it in, and it started heating normally again.

Here's the thermal cut-off(also called a thermal fuse) for this model:
